Sarcoidosis
Sarcoidosis is a lung disease caused by small areas of inflammation in the lungs. It can technically affect any area of the body but is usually found in the lungs. This is known as pulmonary sarcoidosis. When one has pulmonary sarcoidosis, small patch-like areas of inflamed cells can appear on the lungs’ alveoli or air sacs, breathing tubes or lymph nodes. The lungs may become very stiff and may not be able to hold air as well as a healthy lung.
In severe cases, sarcoidosis can scar the tissue in the lungs. This can ultimately affect the lungs capability to transport oxygen to the blood properly. The cause for sarcoidosis is unknown. Fortunately, sarcoidosis is usually a temporary condition. In more than 50% of cases, sarcoidosis heals by itself without any treatment. In serious cases, the physicians at Miami Pulmonary Specialists may treat a patient’s symptoms to help improve lung function
