Lung Biopsy

Lung Biopsy offered by Miami Pulmonary Specialists

What is a Lung Biopsy?

Your Pulmonologist has performed imaging tests. The symptoms or findings suggest that there is an area in your lung that needs to be further evaluated with a small tissue sample. The sample is taken to help in the diagnosis and treatment plan for your condition.

How does one prepare for a lung biopsy?

You should not eat or drink for at least 8 hours prior to the lung biopsy procedure. You should continue taking your medications as directed by your physician. If you are taking blood thinners, your physician may request that you pause that medication for a certain length of time. You should arrange for transportation if you are going to be sedated.

How is the Lung Biopsy performed?

The lung biopsy will be performed by a physician with specific training in image-guided lung procedures. The lung biopsy will be performed under CT-guidance. Medications may be given intravenously to make sure you feel comfortable and in relaxed state. This is normally called conscious sedation.

A lung biopsy is the placing of a thin gauged needle through the skin and placed into the targeted area. The skin is cleansed and a numbing medication is injected prior to the biopsy needle is placed. The lung biopsy needle is carefully placed and advanced into the targeted zone. You might hear a clicking noise, which is the biopsy needle taking the tissue sample. The biopsy needle is then pulled back and removed. A sterile dressing and bandage is applied and the procedure is complete.

What should one expect after the lung biopsy procedure?

After the lung biopsy procedure, you’ll be monitored. X-ray images can be taken to monitor for any complications. The majority of patients are able to go home the same day.
