Wheezing
Wheezing sounds like a high-pitched noise that is heard while breathing. It is usually a symptom of a chronic respiratory condition. Wheezing is caused by narrowed airways which can restrict the movement of air while breathing. This narrowing of the airways can be a direct result of an inflammatory response caused by asthma, an infection (viral or bacterial), or it could be an allergic reaction. Sometimes wheezing can also be due to an airway obstruction caused by a tumor.
Many times, wheezing is a symptom of an underlying condition that can include:
- Emphysema disease
- Inflammation of the Bronchus
- Pneumonia infection
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- COPD defined as Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Lung cancer
- Sleep Disorders (Sleep Apnea)
To identify the causes of wheezing, an imaging test like a chest X-ray or pulmonary function tests may be performed. Treatment options for wheezing can vary and usually are focused on addressing the root cause creating the breathing difficulty. In some instances, wheezing can be alleviated with medication or an inhaler. In very severe cases, a breathing tube may be required. Emergency treatment can be required if there is wheezing with shortness of breath, feeling disoriented, or a blueish tint to the skin.
