Endobronchial Ultrasound at Miami Pulmonary Specialists
What to Expect During Your Endobronchial Ultrasound
Endobronchial Ultrasound is a minimally invasive procedure designed to help pulmonologists accurately stage lung cancers and diagnose other thoracic disorders using Ultrasound technology. Miami Pulmonary Specialists is proud to offer this innovative technology as part of our lung cancer program. This technology enhances our capability to accurately stage cancer and provide a treatment plan without an invasive surgical incision.</p
What happens during an Endobronchial Ultrasound
Endobronchial Ultrasound uses a specialized bronchoscope that includes an ultrasound probe allowing the pulmonologist to view lymph nodes in the chest area. An important step in developing a treatment strategy for the patient is to determine whether the lymph nodes contain cancer cells. The bronchoscope has a tiny needle that is passed through the airway wall. The ultrasound image guides the needle to obtain samples of tissue of the targeted lymph nodes. During the procedure, a pathologist works with the physician to provide an immediate assessment of the samples taken during the procedure.
While Endobronchial Ultrasound is an important tool in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer, other diseases, like lymphoma and sarcoidosis can be detected in the chest without an invasive procedure.
